Cancer patient, Mayowa, dies in S’African hospital

After battling with ovarian cancer for months, Ahmed has been confirmed dead at a hospital in South Africa, where she was flown to for surgery.
’s cousin, Habeeb Odufuye, broke the news of her death on his Twitter account around 1.23pm on Sunday, saying, “Ahmed has left us in this world.

“On behalf of the entire Ahmed’s family, we say thank you to everyone that was part of #SaveMayowa – RTs, donations. God bless you all. She tried, we tried, but God’s will prevailed. By Allah, in whose hands our lives are, Ahmed has left us in this world. We pray that Jannat (paradise) becomes her home,” the tweet read.
One of our correspondents, who called and sent text messages to the telephone line of ’s brother, Ibrahim Ahmed, to confirm the news, did not get a response.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, in a text message to PUNCH Metro, said the command had been informed about ’s death by the family’s lawyer.
“The family’s lawyer contacted the command that she passed on in South Africa,” the text message read.
’s family, supported by Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu; and the director of Lifestake Foundation, Miss Aramide Kasumu, had launched an online appeal to raise funds for her surgery in an Atlanta-based hospital, United States.
The campaign was said to have raised over N80m and a separate $100,000 for her, but Aimakhu later alleged on social media that the campaign was a scam.
The police, after investigating the allegations from both parties, however, described the controversy as a mere misunderstanding between the parties involved and unfroze the Gofundme account, where the donations were paid into.
She was flown to South Africa for treatment on August 10, 2016.

Presidency begins probe of Jonathan, wife, over alleged link to Niger Delta bombings

The Nigerian presidency has ordered
a discreet investigation of former
president, Goodluck Jonathan, and his
wife, Patience, over the spate of
bombings of oil and gas facilities in
the Niger Delta, PREMIUM TIMES
has learnt.
A top government source, quoting
intelligence reports, told this
newspaper that it had now been
established that some of the oil
installations bombed in the Niger
Delta had actually been mined while
President Jonathan was in power,
just before the 2015 election, by
some of the militants and operatives
known to be very close to him.
"The mining was meant to be a
"Plan B should they be removed
from Aso Rock," said the official,
who requested not to be named
because of the sensitive nature of the
matter.
"The plan then was to cause
confusion if the 2015 presidential
election did not go as expected, in
favour of the then incumbent."
"However, when the former
president surprisingly conceded the
election to President Mohammadu
Buhari, according to the source, there
was both disappointment and
confusion in the camp of those who
had designed the plan, causing a
suspension of the whole agenda.
"But by February this year, it was
learnt, the plan was reopened as
several of the backers were getting
investigated on different corruption
cases.
"Mr. Jonathan himself himself was
concerned that himself and his wife
could be prosecuted, including on
money-laundering charges where
investigators said evidence against the
wife has already been amassed.
"It was at that point that the
bombing activities under the banner
of the Niger Delta Avengers started.
"Even the former President himself had been
reported while on a foreign trip as saying he knew
he was under probe. This was after the plan to start
the bombing had become fully operational
according to intelligence reports."
Last June, during a live interview on Bloomberg
Television, Mr. Jonathan said he was aware that
anti-graft agencies were investigating him.
"I am being investigated, yes, investigations are
going on," Mr. Jonathan had said after delivering a
speech on his five-year presidency in London.
Mr. Jonathan's comments came at the same time
the Niger Delta governors were reportedly
prevailing on President Buhari to drop corruption
charges against some highly placed persons from
the region.
"After the Plan B was restored, the 'militant
operatives' who mined the oil and gas installations
only had to arrange for how they would be
detonated at a distance at the wish and timing of
the NDA, their backers and sponsors said to include
the former president, his wife, Government
Tompolo, Mr. Kinglsey Kuku and Olisa Metuh
among others.
"The mining was done by some of the militants
that the previous government had trained under the
amnesty programme, and those who acquired the
needed expertise, besides their knowledge of the
Niger Delta creeks and terrain.
"Experts working with the federal government are
now said to be working to determine how to
discover if there are still many more oil and gas
installations that have been mined and explore the
best means of demining them."
In addition to the mined installations, intelligence
reports, according to the official, also stated that the
NDA and their backers and operatives also had the
capacity to dive in and out of water to damage and
bomb the installations, adding that the federal
government had drawn up the full list of all those
that were trained and equipped in those skills under
the Amnesty Programme.
Our source further disclosed that "the game plan
of Mr. Jonathan and his associates backing the NDA
was to cause enough economic damage in order to
force the Buhari administration to pursue a political
solution to the corruption cases on which
investigations were already advancing against them.
"This is to avoid prosecution and the attendant
unprecedented shame of having a former president
go to jail."
According to another presidency source, "one of
the reasons Mr. Jonathan visited Aso Rock earlier
this month was because he was afraid for himself,
but more readily for his wife against whom silent
investigations had already advanced significantly."
Some MEND members had recently alleged that
former President Jonathan came up with the name
Niger Delta Avengers himself, a claim he has since
denied.
But the intelligence reports, a presidency official
said, confirmed that it was the intervention of the
former president that actually stopped the militants
from the symbolic announcement to declare a
republic earlier this month.
Mr. Jonathan could not be reached on Thursday
morning to comment for this story. He did not
answer or return calls.
So also was Garba Shehu, the senior special
assistant to the President on media and publicity.
He did not answer or return the calls made to him
on Wednesday night.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and
Publicity, Femi Adesina, could not be reached.
However, another presidency spokesperson,
'Laolu Akande, said he was aware Nigerian
security agencies were "massively investigating
the Niger Delta bombings".
"But security or intelligence reports are usually
confidential. You can't expect me or anyone else
to disclose their contents."

Nigeria to Play Honduras for Football Bronze Medal

Nigeria Under-23 football team's failure to reach the
Rio Olympics Gold medal final after the defeat to
Germany last night in Sao Paulo has left the team to
compete against Honduras for the consolatory
bronze medal match on Saturday.
The winner, Germany will now face hosts Brazil in
the Gold medal game after the third place match.
Against the expectation of Brazilian fans at the
stadium yesterday, Germany created the better
chances, while African champions Nigeria hardly
troubled the opposing defence, who adopted the
offside tactic to curtail their offensive threat.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
The Germans deserved their lead after nine minutes
through big defender Lukas Klostermann, who
steered home a low cross from the right.
But they left it late to double their advantage a
minute to full time through substitute Petersen, when
he turned in a pass from an acute angle.
Nigeria were gifted a big chance by the German
goalkeeper Timo Horn to equalize three minutes after
the opponents went in front when his poor clearance
fell to Sadiq Umar inside the box, but he somehow
blocked the effort.
In the 20th minute, Nigeria goalkeeper Emmanuel
Daniel made a point-blank save off Lars Bender to
keep his team in the game.

Buhari Never Received Pension, Gratuities From Army — Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said he has not been receiving military pensions and salaries as former head of state since he assumed office in May 2015. Mr. Buhari said, in fact, he did not receive pensions due to him as a retired military officers, unlike many of his contemporaries. Mr. Buhari was reacting to a narrative circulating on social media which said he has been receiving double payments from the federal coffers. In a statement released by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Twitter, Mr. Buhari said all financial gratuities, vehicles and even souvenirs due him were not paid to him by the Army. "The President has never received pension from the army or car as had gone to former Commanders-in-Chief," Mr. Shehu said. "After his overthrow, they didn't remember him even in the annual distribution of diaries or calendars." "Buhari stopped collecting allowances paid to former Heads of State the moment he took office as elected President last year. "Since his overthrow as military ruler, the army never instituted a pension for him. The army is known to supply cars to former heads of the army. President Buhari never got any of that," Mr. Shehu said. Mr. Shehu said before Mr. Buhari was elected president, he did not benefit from vehicle supplies to former Nigerian leaders, a claim he said could be verified at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. "Before this time, the presidency did not supply cars to him as they did the former Heads of State," Mr. Shehu said. "This is verifiable from the SGF's office." Source: PremiumTimes

Nigerians consume 3.2 million tonnes of fish annually

Nigeria requires about 3.2 million metric tons of fish for consumption annually in the country. The Director-General, National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA, Lucy Ogbadu, disclosed this at the graduation ceremony of 38 females who received training on fish spawning and breeding in Kano on Wednesday. The training was conducted by the agency in collaboration with the Bayero University Centre for Dryland Agriculture. The director-general was represented by the Kano State Coordinator of NABDA, Kabiru Yusuf. She said the country currently produced a total of 1.1 million metric tons of fish, leaving a huge gap of two million tons in the supply of fish and fish products. "In 2014 alone, Nigeria imported 8,000 metric tons of fish thereby employing foreign producers to feed Nigerians thus depleting our hard- earned resources and foreign exchange. "The gap in the supply of fish in the country is enormous, "Ogbadu said. She said the training was designed to build capacity of the beneficiaries in fish spawning, breeding and entrepreneurship. She called on them to make the best use of the training so as to contribute in feeding the country with fresh and clean fish. In his remarks, a lecturer at the Department of Dryland Agriculture, Sunusi Gaya, said that the department would continue to partner with groups and individuals who were ready to learn skills on agriculture.
