UNIOSUN DEBATE AND QUIZ TEAMS EXCEL AT ALL NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES TOURNAMENT
Co-curricular activities like debate and quiz
competitions are examples of educational
competitions that have become prominent
among Nigerian Universities.
Over the years, these two competitions have
helped in the development of highly brilliant
and competitive students capable of holding
their own among other university students in
Nigeria.
As such, it is not surprising that UNIOSUN
Teams excelled at both the National debate
and quiz competitions at the just concluded
Students’ Leadership Development Tournament
(SLEDT) 2015 and All Nigerian Universities
Quiz Challenge (ANUC) UNILORIN 2015 which
took place at the University of Ilorin, Main
Campus, in Ilorin.
At the debate tournament (SLEDT 2015),
which took place between May 20th and 22nd
2015, the UNIOSUN Debating Team of Kola
Adeagbo (Political Science), Temilowuwa
Ogundele and Oluwanimbe Omolaja (both of
Law) brilliantly and intellectually outperformed
all other universities by scoring 79.6% to
come first overall, beating University of Ilorin-
the host institution(78.9%), Federal University
of Technology Owerri (FUTO) (69.9%), Federal
University, Minna (64%) and University of
Calabar (60.5%)to second, third, fourth and
fifth places respectively. With this victory,
UNIOSUN also won the available Gold trophy
and an automatic ticket to compete at the All
African Debate in South Africa in August 2015.
In addition, being the winning University,
UNIOSUN, was also awarded the hosting right
for the 2016 Debate Tournament to hold in
Osogbo.
In another instance, at ANUC 2015, on May
17th and 20th 2015, the UNIOSUN Team of
Emmanuel Olatunde (Law), Olawale Lawal
(Political Science), Obadeyi Oluwakemi (Law),
Olalekan Hassan (Law) and Oguntoye Opeoluwa
(Political Science) , performed creditably to win
the second place position. As the first runner-
up, the UNIOSUN Quiz team was awarded a
plaque as well as two tablet computers. The
quiz covered general knowledge, information
technology, history and heritage, current local
affairs, international affairs, science and
engineering, natural and applied sciences,
medicine and religious knowledge.
In addition, by virtue of participating in this
year’s quiz competition, university was
selected into the National Board of
Universities Quiz Competition. With these
notable back to back achievements at the
Debate Tournament and Quiz Competition,
UNIOSUN has been able to prove itself as a
University who’s living up to its goal and
mission coupled with a robust preparation of
students for the future.
